When the divorce question arises, the domestic abuse question often is raised as well. It is the position of Adult Children of Divorce Ministries that there is no biblical justification for domestic abuse. PERIOD. When God said, “I hate divorce” in Malachi 2:16, he was NOT referring to women who are being abused by their husbands. It is unfortunate that scriptures, including some on forgiveness, have been used to keep women and children (and some men) in harm’s way. This is contrary to the intent of God’s word and the heart of Jesus Christ.

If you (and/or your children) are being abused by your husband/boyfriend (or wife/girlfriend), call the National Domestic Violence Hotline immediately. They can refer you to local agencies that can help you.

It is also advised to speak with your pastor or church leader. Their first priority should be your safety and the safety of your children. There is no biblical excuse or rationale for domestic abuse. If they don’t agree with this, find someone else who can help you.
For those in spiritual leadership who may not understand how to effectively minister in domestic violence situations, a recommended book is The Heart of Domestic Abuse: Gospel Solutions for Men Who Use Control and Violence in the Home by Chris Moles. Every church leader should have a copy of this book on the shelf.
